Taking Vacations In The Scottish Highlands

Wednesday, October 21st, 2009

Over on the west side of Scotland, on the very north west fringe of Europe, you will find the dramatic Scottish Highlands. The reason this part of the world is so dramatic is the compound effect of massive geological shifts and the actions of glaciers, weather and man. Staggering mountain scenes are brought to a stunning climax when the sun sets, when the sky can become all manner of shades of reds, yellows and purples. These factors are just some of the many reasons why the area is such a popular vacation destination. One of the busiest towns in the Highlands is Fort William which could be described as the area’s outdoor capital.

When you first arrive at the largest town in the Highlands, Fort William, you will most probably be driving along the main road which replaced the seafront many years ago. Thankfully the town’s High Street has kept some of it’s character but most visitors to Fort William are not really here for the town, they are here to indulge in all manner of outdoor sports in the surrounding area. Top of the list for most is Ben Nevis the UK’s highest peak which can be seen towering over the town.

Many people arrive at Fort William to admire the view of Ben Nevis and attempt to reach the summit. One of the things you should know about this Munro is that one route is pretty easy on foot compared to the other which should only be tackled by experienced mountain climbers. Please ensure that you make sure that you are dressed for all weathers as it is likely you will see them all and, even at the height of summer, snow is not unusual. Ben Nevis sees more deaths a year than Mount Everest.

If you enjoy spectacular views then you will enjoy Ben Nevis but for those who are not prepared to go to such lengths there are a number of other places which offer incredible views. One of the best ways in which to take in some of the most beautiful sights of the area is to take a ride on the West Highland Railway from Fort William to Mallaig.

For fans of the Harry Potter films a visit to the Highlands of Scotland would not be complete without taking a trip on the Jacobite steam train. The Jacobite is the steam engine used to play the part of Hogwarts’ Express and one of the most recognised parts of the route is over the Glenfinnan Aqueduct which has been rechristened by fans as the “Harry Potter Bridge”.

Although you only catch sight of it for a short time it is well worth watching out for the Glenfinnan Monument which was built in 1815 as a memorial to those who fought in the Jacobite Uprising of 1745, and the raising of the standard there by Bonnie Prince Charlie at the start of the rebellion.

When the steam train reaches Glenfinnan Railway Station it will remain there for about twenty minutes which will give you enough time to take a quick look around the lovely museum in the grade II listed building or grab something to eat in the old dining car which has excellent homemade food.

Taking a journey on the Jacobite steam train can be a full day out, leaving from Fort William in the morning arriving shortly after in Glenfinnan and then on to Mallaig returning later that afternoon. That’s twice you will be traveling along one of the most beautiful stretches of railway track in Great Britain.

Tanning Lamps

Tuesday, September 8th, 2009

Tanning bed lamps are located in every sun bed or suntan lamp in the shops. When you are buying a new or especially a used suntan bed, make a good examination of the lamps. Make sure that they are real tanning bulbs and meet the FDA regulations with regard to health and safety. You should also consider how easy it is to get at the lamps. Be sure that the lamps are not difficult to change when needed. It is quite important, and a lot cheaper, if you can carry out such simple maintenance yourself, if you buy a home sun bed.

There are different types of lamps used in conventional and high pressure beds. Make sure you buy the right tanning bed bulbs for your bed, because they are not interchangeable. If you are purchasing replacement bulbs on the Internet, check the make and model of your existing bulbs carefully. Ensure that the lamps you are buying are made for your bed.

High Pressure Tanning Bulbs: high pressure beds have quartz-tube lamps in a multitude of sizes. The gases used in these bulbs are pressurized to slightly higher than atmospheric pressure. The lamps in these beds are located in the top of the bed, so that you tan only from above. When you have tanned the skin on one side of your body for about 10-12 minutes, you turn over and tan the other side. The flat bed of these tanners is a great deal more comfortable than a regular sun bed.

The biggest benefit of these bulbs is the amount of time you have to spend on the tanning bed. Since you tan faster, you need to spend less time in the salon, which means it works out cheaper. You can achieve the depth of tan you require in about three weeks of three to five sessions each week. However, with a conventional bed, it would take you at least a month to achieve the same depth of colour. Maintaining your tan is much easier too. You only need two or three sessions each month to maintain the colour, compared with four times that many sessions on a low pressure bed. Many of these bulbs use UVA rays only, not UVB rays which are responsible for burning.

Conventional Sun Bed Bulbs: Conventional, or low pressure beds use long tube lamps that look like household fluorescent tubes. The lamps are located above and below the bed of the sun bed, which means that all the body parts are tanned at the same time, without the need to change positions during the session.

Conventional beds use UVA and UVB rays in varying levels. Some use both and others use mostly UVA with a bit of UVB rays. UVA rays are the cause of the (premature) ageing effects on the skin and UVB rays are the burning rays that cause sunburn when you are outside in the sun. It is very important to determine which type of rays your tan bed emits. You must be sure to replace your existing bulbs with comparable new lamps after about 1,000 hours of use.

Another consideration when selecting the type of bed you use at home or in the salon, is the tanning bed lotion you will use. Different lotions suit different types of beds. The staff at your tanning salon can help you choose a lotion that will work for the bed you are using and your skin type. No matter what bed you use, you should certainly always use a lotion or a cream, because they will nourish your skin and help you tan faster.

Camping Trip Essentials

Monday, August 31st, 2009

A lot of people who go camping don’t really know what they need to bring. This is something that will be better when they have done it few times. There is one thing that are common to experts in the camping community and that is how careful they plan every trip they go on. Some even feel that the planning is half the trip.

I know that for a lot of people it can be hard to plan exactly what to bring on a camping trip. In this article I will try my best to help you pack the right things at least. Bringing the right/wrong things can in many cases make or break your trip.

Often when I think back at my camping trips, it is the good food combined with a good environment around the table that first comes to mind. This is why the first thing that I always back is my cooking equipment. The modern ones usually don’t weigh anything, so they are easy to carry.

Sleeping under the sky on a warm night all by yourself is something that most people dream of. I dream of it too. However, I always bring a tent no matter how good the weather is. It is more than once that the rain has taken me by total surprise. The tents that you buy today are usually pretty lightweight and small, so it shouldn’t be a problem carrying it.

I know that a lot of people choose to leave their sleeping bag at home when they go camping. For me this is out of the question, because i can’t sleep without something around my body. There are plenty of sleeping bags to choose from, so you should not have a problem finding one that will fit your needs. A mattress is also something i bring along.

You should also always consider bringing a map of the area that you are traveling in. Or, if you have a GPS you will also do just fine.

Even though these things are very important to remember, there is one thing that is even more important for a lot of people. That thing is obviously food. For the regular camper catching and preparing food in the wild is not a common thing to do. Food that you bring from home is a lot easier to deal with.

If you want to know more about camping equipment, you can visit this blog about Camping Chair, or you can see this hub about Camping tables and chairs.
