Honeymoons are too often seen as secondary to the planning of the wedding itself, when, in terms of memories, they are of equal, if not greater, importance.
First determine what your objectives are for the trip and what you absolutely can’t do without. Where do you want to go? What do you want to do? What are your priorities? Cost, adventure, sightseeing, weather, etc.
Visits to exclusive resorts or islands remain the most popular choice, for obvious reasons. Such trips allow you to enjoy quality, quiet time together whilst unwinding from the busy schedule of the previous six months and losing yourselves in beautiful surroundings.
Another option is to take a cruise; they give you the same quiet, relaxing time whilst also allowing you to take in a range of destinations. If you would have a preference for a more active honeymoon, give consideration to an adventure travel trip or a mountain resort.
As for honeymoon locations, these are some of the most popular: Australia, Bahamas, Bali, Canada, Costa Rica, Egypt, France, Hawaii, Maldives, Seychelles, Spain.
Whichever kind of location and honeymoon you decide on, look to book it a minimum of six months beforehand to ensure that you’ll have the pick of the rooms, and can start planning for your time away. Ask your hotel if they offer a ‘romance’ or ‘honeymoon’ package available to enhance your time away; romantic extras such as the honeymoon suite, iced champagne and bouquets of flowers will make your time away more memorable still.
Research and book tours, tickets, restaurant seats, and any other activities that require advance reservations, especially should you be traveling during peak season. Don’t go overboard with planning though as plenty of free time should be left available, especially during the first few days, in which simply enjoying the company of one another should be your main aim.
Do what you can to make your honeymoon different to an ordinary vacation. In addition to standard vacation items, try taking some fun extras with you, like romantic music, candles, bubble bath, massage lotion and lingerie. Finally, don’t forget to take a video camera and pocket camera with you, so you can look back on your special time together forever.
